Tom Smith shares his experience of colon cancer

We're grateful to 40tude's ambassador Tom Smith for sharing his experience of colon cancer, and in particular, why it's so important to report any symptoms immediately.

In recent weeks Tom has been speaking about how this past year has been for him, his treatment for colon cancer and the support he is giving to 40tude.

Former Scotland captain and British & Irish Lion Tom was diagnosed with colon cancer at the age of 48. After nominating 40tude to be a beneficiary of the Wounded Lions 500 Challenge in February 2020, Tom is continuing to support 40tude as an ambassador for the charity.

“I’m delighted to become an ambassador for 40tude and to support their inspiring work,” explains Tom. “40tude is working to raise awareness of colon cancer, and its message is simple but vital: ‘get screened regularly for colon cancer from your mid-40s.’ If more people get screened, more lives can be saved.”

Earlier this year Tom spoke candidly on the Official Scottish Rugby Podcast, and to Eleanor Oldroyd on BBC Radio 5 Live.

It’s important for all of us to be aware of the symptoms of colon cancer and to act if we spot them. This is particularly important at this time when many of our cancer specialists are supporting the NHS in the fight against Covid-19.
